Signs and Symptoms

Because the signs and symptoms of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma are often insidious and vague, patients and doctors often disregard them or attribute them to other, more common lung disorders such as infectious (pneumonia / empyema) or inflammatory conditions (asthma and allergy). Moreover, these symptoms tend to develop slowly and do not emerge for 15 to 40 years after exposure to the causal carcinogens (such as asbestos or radiation). See Risk Factors for more information on these cancer-causing agents. For this reason, it is difficult to catch mesothelioma early. However, the signs and symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Pleural effusion
  • Faint or harsh breathing sounds
  • Chest pain
