In November of 2005, Mrs. Sandy Mulcahey was diagnosed with mesothelioma. After discovering she had a pleural effusion, or fluid around her lung, she went through a battery of testing that yielded the diagnosis. She was referred to Dr. David Sugarbaker by her primary care physician. After her initial consultation with Dr. Sugarbaker, Mrs. Mulcahey felt that she was in the right place. Mrs. Mulcahey underwent an extra pleural pneumonectomy, a radical surgery to remove the entire lung as well as the covering of the heart and the diaphragm. She was also treated with chemotherapy. After a long recovery, that included a couple of additional surgeries, Mrs. Mulcahey is doing extremely well and leading a very active lifestyle. She exercises, volunteers, and spends a lot of time with her grandchildren.
