Dr. Sugarbaker studied medicine at Cornell University Medical College, in New York, earning his M.D. in 1979. Thereafter, his completed his surgical internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Massachusetts and residency training at Toronto General Hospital in Canada. Dr. Sugarbaker was the chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 1988 to 2014, at which point he decided to move his practice to Texas, founding the MTC. He is currently The Olga Keith Weiss Chair of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Sugarbaker has mentored 31 medical trainees who have established successful careers, including his fellow MTC collaborators: Dr. Bryan Burt and Dr. Shawn Groth.

Dr. Burt earned his Bachelor of Arts at New York University in 1999 and his M.D. from Weill Medical College of Cornell University in 2003. He completed is Internship and Residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Massachusetts. Dr. Burt became an assistant professor in 2012 with his first appointment in Cardiovascular Surgery at Stanford University, and his most recent appointment at Baylor College of Medicine in 2014. Dr. Burt is now the director of Thoracic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He has published over 45 original articles and book chapters and has successfully maintained national funding for his research. Dr. Burt remains committed to teaching and research by instructing medical fellows in Cardiothoracic Surgery and Operative Anatomy.

Dr. Groth earned his Bachelor of Arts at St. Olaf College in 1999 and his M.D. at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in 2003. To further develop a clinical research focus, he returned to school in 2006 to earn a Master of Science in Clinical Research from The University of Minnesota. He completed his internship and residency at University of Minnesota and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Massachusetts. In 2013, Dr. Groth became clinical instructor for the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In 2014, he was appointed to assistant professor of Surgery for the Division of Thoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Groth has won numerous awards and accolades and has been committed to service and teaching. He has published over 55 original manuscripts and book chapters.
