Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center
The Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center-Texas Medical Center, a private, 850-bed, adult hospital, is jointly owned by Baylor College of Medicine and CHI St. Luke’s Health. The Mesothelioma Treatment Center (MTC) was founded within this hospital to provide unparalleled care and opportunities for its patients. The MTC at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center partners with two key academic institutions – The Dan L Duncan Cancer Center and Baylor College of Medicine.
The Dan L Duncan Cancer Center is one of 64 NCI-designated cancer centers in the United States. The Duncan Cancer Center originally achieved this status in 2007, and successfully renewed that designation in 2010. Most recently, the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center was awarded the prestigious designation of a Comprehensive Cancer Center, joining an elite group of fewer than 50 centers nationwide and only three centers in Texas. With this designation, the Duncan Cancer Center received a $14.5 million, five-year grant that will fund cancer research and clinical trials. The center is the result of a collaboration of scientists and physicians, including many from Baylor College of Medicine.
Baylor College of Medicine bcm.edu was founded in 1900 under the name of the University of Dallas Medical Department. Shortly thereafter, it became the medical college for Baylor University, but separated as an independent institution in 1969. Baylor boasts a top-ranking medical school and is ranked 19th in terms of research funding from the National Institutes of Health. Importantly to the MTC, BCM is home to the Human Genome Sequencing Center, which makes the cutting-edge genomic research proposed by MTC physicians possible.
In addition to the MTC, Baylor St. Luke’s is also home of the Texas Heart® Institute. In addition to the collaborative partnership with Baylor College of Medicine, the hospital holds affiliations with The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, The University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston), Houston Baptist University, and Prairie View A&M University.
